Additionally, we plan to modify the SMC pay threshold (median wage) regulations and establish two new pathways to the SMC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-463b133de9eacd99ffe01097b0ece37f wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What has changed since August 2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d0ca68c755ae17a41d77250f1792ff5d wp-block-paragraph\">We will be implementing the following modifications to the SMC starting on August 24, 2026:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-superbfont-xsmall-font-size\">2 new SMC pathways, alongside the existing Points-based pathway<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-superbfont-xsmall-font-size\">updates to the Points-based pathway, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-superbfont-xsmall-font-size\">changes to the SMC wage-threshold (median-wage) rules.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5025d7632fa453800a4a038e9a4ea74f wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Who is impacted?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-ef0f01a83857cc991ee0853b551e2663 wp-block-paragraph\">You might be impacted if you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-superbfont-xsmall-font-size\">are already working in New Zealand and planning to apply for an SMC Resident Visa<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-superbfont-xsmall-font-size\">They are relying on a qualification to get points<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-superbfont-xsmall-font-size\">do not currently meet the 6-point threshold, or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-superbfont-xsmall-font-size\">work in a trades or technician role.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-eb1aba4f328ec79ae68360f7a753cb1a wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>New SMC pathways<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-89d712968ce0329f4d9e187f993c81a9 wp-block-paragraph\">From 24 August 2026, 2 new pathways will be added to the SMC. The Skilled Work Experience pathway and the Trades and Technician pathway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes has-superbfont-xsmall-font-size\"><table class=\"has-blush-light-purple-gradient-background has-background has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Pathway<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Who is it for<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Main requirements<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Points-based<\/td><td>Most applicants<\/td><td>Reach 6 points<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Skilled Work Experience<\/td><td>People with strong work history<\/td><td>5+ years of work experience<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Trades &amp; Technician<\/td><td>Trades\/technical roles<\/td><td>Qualification and work experience<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c4cfe4da8b51706ba4090754a6f9e608 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pathway for Skilled Work Experience<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-ae372cf58351decfd3f584425aaf12e8 wp-block-paragraph\">According to the existing regulations, if you do not have enough points from your salary, qualification, or occupational registration alone, you can use skilled work experience in <strong>New Zealand<\/strong> to reach the six-point barrier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-48eb847ecc5a47bade51426f456cf39b wp-block-paragraph\">Starting on August 24, 2026, the SMC will offer a new pathway that enables you to obtain housing solely through job experience. The Points-based pathway will not be connected to this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0af53fb00528b54882d22d5e81e5e18b wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Skilled Work Experience pathway will be available to you if you:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-superbfont-xsmall-font-size\">work in an ANZSCO skill level 1\u20133 occupation or receive a job offer that pays at least 1.1 times the SMC salary threshold (median wage).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-superbfont-xsmall-font-size\">possess a minimum of three years of relevant work experience in an ANZSCO skill level 1\u20133 occupation, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-superbfont-xsmall-font-size\">possess a minimum of 1.1 times the SMC median wage (median wage threshold) and two more years of skilled job experience in New Zealand in an ANZSCO skill level 1 to 3 occupation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c6b0ee5a33baa33269495ca1482f2008 wp-block-paragraph\">To qualify for this option, you must meet additional requirements if your current position or job offer is on the Amber List.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e11cd398c14d2610ab7b6af3cc6ea071 wp-block-paragraph\">You won&#8217;t be eligible for this pathway if your present position or job offer is on the Red List or is an ANZSCO skill level 4 or 5 occupation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-4e31eb85ca983b9bf403f2f98dbc6dbb wp-block-paragraph\">Self-employment is not considered meaningful job experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-ad138df3c0a8c32f182171519d1edd89 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jobs on the Amber List<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-13638f41731e319f522dae641e8deec9 wp-block-paragraph\">Those who are hired or have a job offer in these fields must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-superbfont-xsmall-font-size\">get compensation that is at least 1.2 times the SMC wage requirement, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-superbfont-xsmall-font-size\">possess a minimum of three years of relevant work experience in an ANZSCO skill level 1 to 3 occupation in New Zealand, and\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-superbfont-xsmall-font-size\">have an additional 2 years of skilled work experience in New Zealand in an ANZSCO skill level 1 to 3 occupation, paid at least 1.2 times the SMC wage wp-elements-da242237367f65dd33621a24453029f0 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pathway for Trades and Technicians<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d63a7d5c1b7da0fa3dca828c20b573ae wp-block-paragraph\">People with trades and technician vocations will have access to a new pathway starting on August 24, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-71d4540a985159de77b1b6cb1c97e3c8 wp-block-paragraph\">The Trades and Technician pathway will be available to you if you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-superbfont-xsmall-font-size\">possess at least the SMC salary threshold (median wage) of post-qualification, skilled job experience in New Zealand for an extra 1.5 years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-superbfont-xsmall-font-size\">work as a technician or in an eligible trade that pays at least the SMC salary threshold (median wage).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-superbfont-xsmall-font-size\">possess a relevant qualification that is either higher than or equal to level 4 on the NZQCF.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-superbfont-xsmall-font-size\">possess a minimum of 2.5 years of relevant post-qualification work experience in an ANZSCO skill level 1\u20133 occupation, and<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7d22e14452ceb9c8167253f53a9fac7e wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>New Zealand qualification requirements for redit<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8f216f8a8f23551826a9198420914500 wp-block-paragraph\">If you possess a New Zealand qualification, it must be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-superbfont-xsmall-font-size\">at least 120 credits on the NZQCF, or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-superbfont-xsmall-font-size\">less than 120 credits but with multiple prerequisite qualifications that together make at least 120 credits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-50f9ba3ac3fb89b8874d24e35d9c165b wp-block-paragraph\">The 120 credit threshold will not be met if you received credits in recognition of earlier learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-739c45f88359c87d54abfed275a3608a wp-block-paragraph\">There are no credit requirements, but your international qualification must be at least level 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-596a06e5584592be35e59f6051933caa wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Evidence of qualifications<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-superbfont-xsmall-font-size\">You will need to provide evidence of your qualification.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6c9334f6360bf77818f25740eccae1d6 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Overseas qualifications<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-19d31b04c77c89033701b5479a65830e wp-block-paragraph\">You must obtain an International Qualification Assessment (IQA) from the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) if you have an international qualification. A copy of the IQA and the qualification certificate must be submitted with your residency application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f0b1d31a0d9158cd945e517b911d1f08 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>New Zealand qualifications<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b1d60bc73032f41008f9ed258156f9fd wp-block-paragraph\">When applying for residency, you must submit a copy of your New Zealand qualification certificate together with an academic transcript (or its equivalent).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-74fd9fba6e261d1000a384681919065d wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The amount of time needed to obtain job experience<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color has-superbfont-xsmall-font-size wp-elements-e0c0fc675a571732bd66ec286e832176 wp-block-paragraph\">For the Skilled Work Experience or Trades and Technician track, you must have completed your work experience within a certain amount of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-fd0074e8962d737e9cf31b92ea60038f wp-block-paragraph\">This period, which starts on the day you apply for residency, is ten years for relevant job experience. For instance, if you want three years of relevant job experience, it must have been obtained within the ten years before your residency application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-4371b277f29e8de0a8d496ade83039e6 wp-block-paragraph\">For skilled work experience, this timeframe is twice as long as the amount of experience you need, counted back from the date you apply for residence. For example, if you need 2 years of skilled work experience, this experience must have been gained within the 4 years immediately before you apply for residence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-88a2e29495789a8045c00410e943d50a wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Changes to the Points-based pathway<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-ec47c38b14e6ac5196f495fcd3cffa02 wp-block-paragraph\">From 24 August 2026 you will be able to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-superbfont-xsmall-font-size\">reach the 6-point threshold with less New Zealand work experience.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-superbfont-xsmall-font-size\">get extra points for New Zealand qualifications<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-superbfont-xsmall-font-size\">get more points for overseas bachelor&#8217;s degrees and postgraduate certificates, and<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-9fba919eba182220381311ba3fa1da75 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Changes from 24 August 2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f6bc397c2ef31448a2bbf49a9fda851c wp-block-paragraph\">From 24 August 2026 you will only need to meet the SMC wage threshold that was in place when you started gaining skilled work experience. This means that your current job or job offer must meet the rate that applied at that time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-77e3b86c1b321a029c5dbf8c3f8d08d1 wp-block-paragraph\">For most people, you will not need to meet a higher SMC wage threshold if you change jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-dark-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-cd0ac5386801a5548c7746d48e3f3cb4 wp-block-paragraph\">You may need to meet a higher SMC wage threshold if you apply under the Points-based pathway and are changing jobs from a skill level 1 to 3 occupation to a skill level 4 or 5 occupation.
