Sweden ranks as a major destination for skilled workers wanting to live and work overseas. Previously, Sweden was not granting any permits for individuals to enter the country to search for work and start their own businesses. In June 2022, the Swedish government launched a Residence permit for highly skilled individuals to seek employment or establish a business, known as the Sweden job seeker visa.

What is the Sweden Job Seeker Visa?
If you are a non-EU national and wish to work in Sweden, you must have a work permit. In response to labor shortages, Sweden is the fourth European nation to introduce a job seeker visa. This implies that you can now travel to Sweden without having a job offer prior to your arrival.
In April 2022, Sweden announced the job seeker visa and established the procedure for potential immigrants who want to relocate to Sweden but do not yet have a job offer. With this new achievement, Sweden joins Portugal, Germany, and Austria as European nations that introduced the job seeker visa in response to the severe labor shortage.
If you are a non-EU foreign national interested in working in Sweden, the easiest way to apply is with a work permit or a Sweden job seeker visa. You can do this online because online applications are sent directly to the Swedish Migration Agency and are processed with priority.
Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö are just a few of the Swedish cities with plenty of job opportunities. When working in Sweden, being able to speak the official language can be very motivating because it can help you get a job.
Sweden job seeker visa requirements
To qualify for this permit application, you:
- An advanced degree—a master’s, doctoral, or advanced vocational or professional degree—is required.
- You must be able to sustain yourself financially during your entire stay in Sweden,
- You must have health insurance valid for care in Sweden.
- Have a passport that is valid for the duration of your intended stay,
- Should be outside of Sweden, and
- You must have the intention of seeking employment or exploring the possibility of starting your own business there.
What constitutes an advanced-level degree?
In the above paragraph it’s stated that having an advanced level degree is a must to obtain a job seeker visa to travel to Sweden. Your degree will be regarded as advanced level if it matches any of the following:
- A Master’s degree worth 60 credits,
- A Master’s degree requiring 120 credits,
- A vocational qualification totaling 60-330 credits, or
- A degree at the postgraduate or doctoral level.
When submitting the application, you must include a letter authorizing the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR) to reach out to your educational institution to verify the educational documents you provided.
Your documents are sent to UHR by the Swedish Migration Agency so they can evaluate your educational background. Before you submit your application, the Agency is unable to respond to inquiries regarding the level of your degree. This permit is a prerequisite for the Sweden work visa, also known as the work permit.
Sweden job seeker visa processing time
Following your application, your case will be reviewed and decided by the Swedish Migration Agency. You will be given a permit for a minimum of three months and a maximum of nine months if all the documentation is acceptable.
You will be issued a residence permit card if the permit is valid for more than three months. The card, which includes your fingerprint, photo, and other pertinent visa-related information, serves as proof that your stay in Sweden is legitimate.
