New Zealand to Introduce New English Test Rules for All Major Skilled Work Visa Pathways from June, 2026
New Zealand is to increase its minimum English language requirement for more mid-skilled jobs under the Accredited Employer Work Visa from June 2026. From 1 July, the English language requirements currently applying to skill level 4 and 5 roles will be extended to also apply to ANZSCO and National Occupation List skill level 3 roles.
New Zealand’s new move is to help foreign workers understand their immigration rights and rules so they can integrate effectively into workplaces and communities. Applicants will still need to meet the baseline IELTS 4.0 standard or an equivalent standard for English proficiency.
New Zealand has updated its language rules for 2026 and here are the highlights:
- Rules of the English language will now be implemented for skill level 3 AEWV positions.
- The requirement is already in place for skill levels 4 and 5.
- Candidates must achieve IELTS 4.0 or a comparable level.
- The adjustment occurs prior to the introduction of two new skilled residency options starting in August.
- Employees seeking permanent residency will be given up to five years to achieve the elevated English proficiency levels necessary for residency.
- The regulation will not apply to roles within the Global Workforce Sector Agreement.
In what ways do the revised language regulations impact international candidates relocating to New Zealand?
The updated English language policy aims to simplify the work visa process for international applicants in mid-skilled positions in New Zealand. Candidates for skill level 3 positions may now be required to show IELTS 4.0 or similar English test results, introducing an additional criterion for obtaining an Accredited Employer Work Visa.
Here’s what the new language policies signify for applicants of NZ work visas:
- A greater number of mid-skilled foreign employees will now require evidence of their English language skills.
- Applicants might need to take the IELTS or similar language assessments before applying for a work visa.
Employees who possess stronger English proficiency might have an easier time blending into work environments and local communities. - Achieving the fundamental English requirement may also aid future residency applications in New Zealand.
